In this article, and on the basis of the origins of psychology, it is argued that clinical psychology is a scientific-professional discipline with its own history and identity, and whose objectives are assessment and diagnosis, treatment and research in the field of psychological or mental disorders.
Clinical psychology coincides with psychiatry in that its object is the mental disorder, not mental illness; thus, the professional functions of clinical psychologists and psychiatrists are to a large extent convergent. The differences reside in the fact that the psychiatrist does not have the appropriate training to use treatments and diagnostic instruments developed by psychological research, while the psychologist possesses neither the legal authorization nor the necessary qualifications to administer pharmacological therapies.
Both the clinical psychologist and the psychiatrist are sufficiently equipped for diagnosis and decision on the most appropriate therapeu- tic strategy in each case, thus supporting the need for co-operation based on the recog- nition of their different expertise and background.
