This instruction has been widely published and distributed by UL, by trade journals and instruction books, and in the National Electric Code Handbook.
Since about , until now, no twist-on connectors were listed by UL for this purpose. Prior to most twist on connectors on the market were listed by UL as suitable for the purpose.
The actual performance in this application varied widely, however, depending on the construction and installation method. The pigtailing application works this way. A short copper wire is spliced to the aluminum circuit wire. The copper wire is connected to the device terminal. The pigtail splices carry full circuit current to downstream loads. With the best connector and method of installation, this could be a safe technique.
This article series continues with Copper Pigtailing and other links you 'll find below - just scroll down. The free end of the grounding pigtail attaches to the other grounding wires with a wire connector. When metal boxes are used, there may be two grounding pigtails: one attached to the metal box, and one attached to the device, with the free ends of both pigtails joined to the circuit grounding wires using a wire connector.
With plastic electrical boxes, there will be only a single grounding pigtail linking the circuit grounding wires to the device. Once all wire connections are complete, tuck the wires back into the electrical box, secure the device to the box, and mount the cover plate.

Warning It is important that the pigtail wires match the wire gauge of the circuit wires. Tip Many electricians use the pigtailing method for connecting hot and neutral wires, even when there are two screw terminals available to attach the circuit wires. Featured Video. Some of the wires may be corroaded, that is esspecially common with aluminum.
I have had to go 18 inches above the box to find good non brittle insulation. And I have done jobs that went very quickly. A lot depends on if they had used electric space heaters or not.
I done a 12 unit apartment building. Last edited: Jun 29, JFletcher Senior Member. Location Williamsburg, VA. In addition to what has been written above, I'd do a site home survey as well. Make sure the HO moves all of the furniture and other belongings out of your way. Moving it would have and did take almost an entire day. Right now, I have two outlets and a switch that are blocked by heavy furniture desks.
My point is that there may be non-electrical related issues that can also affect your quote or bottom line. Location Louisville, Kentucky. What method of connection are you planning on using for CU to AL? I'm puzzled by the fan, recess and other lights. Why pigtail copper to aluminum and then back to copper? Have you thought about changing the devices to AL instead of adding the pigtails? Click to expand Dennis Alwon said:.
I think the op wants to use copper pigtails and connect them to the existing aluminum wire. I still would like to hear of a good estimate please. I appreciate the posts so far but not confident yet in the advice as far as price goes. The home owner wants the aluminum wire that connects the recess lights, fan etc, to be copper. This will involve me taking down lights and exposeing the junction box to make splices. I'll be using wire nuts special for this application.
The other factors are understood.
