It has the smallest memory footprint and catches everything. Trend micro missed several viruses and 2 keyloggers on one of my many systems I used as a test bed.

Trend Micro is simply junk product with customer service so bad that they don't even respond to trouble tickets anymore. NOD32 is the real deal and not a toy like pccillin. It seemed to get all the way through the install process, then BAM! Then, it would almost be done rebooting, and BAM! I had to boot from my Acronis boot disk and restore my C: drive - there was no other way! Until installing the version, I have never had anything negative to say about them. Their product has been absolutely great.

The version, however is causing some major headaches. The worst, for me , is the problem with the PcScnSrv. That program lets you "immunize" your computer against lots of the threats out there.

NO WAY! Hopefully, Trend will address this problem quickly, otherwise I will re-install using my key. I hate to feel cheated! Before this, I would have given them an absolute "5".

I'm using Vista Business, build and needed a good firewall that works on Vista. I looked around and apparently Trend Micro works with Vista so I installed the trial edition. Everything worked pretty well, no worries until the last few updates.

My settings: Everything off except anti-virus and firewall, this includes internet email controls off, and web site controls off, wireless controls off.

In Firefox, I get a popup for every page visited. It doesn't learn that it's ok to use Firefox. When I try to modify the firewall profile, it gives me this error, "The current Personal firewall profile exception rules cannot apply to missing or invalid programs. My program, Trillian get's about 20 popups on startup too.

Date published: I feel this is the computer protection. Easy to use extremely reliable. Rated 5 out of 5 by kevinhehir from Entirely reliable I have used Trend Micro for many years without problems Date published: TMIS even slandered a Firefox installation! This feature should report only on changes that are actually a problem, and it certainly shouldn't call every unknown program spyware. Spyware Doctor only reports suspicious behaviors when it can identify the perpetrator as malicious; Spy Sweeper is working toward the same style.

In TMIS, users will learn to ignore or turn off these spurious warnings. The TMIS firewall can recognize different network configurations and use a different profile for each. So, for example, you may have a relaxed profile with file sharing enabled within your local network but a locked-tight profile for wireless surfing at the local coffeeshop.

I installed it on a system with the equivalent of a direct connection to the Internet—going through what Linksys calls the "DMZ Host" address on the router. It stealthed almost all the ports, but strangely, it left vulnerable ports and wide open. Trend's tech experts suggested that the product's automatic configuration might have been thrown off by the unconventional configuration. So I uninstalled the product, connected the test system directly to the incoming broadband connection, and tried again.

Those two ports remained open! Yet Trend can't duplicate this result. As expected, the firewall also controls which programs can access the network and Internet. It configures access automatically for programs found in its Web-based database of almost a million entries, cutting down on those annoying confirmation pop-ups.

But it doesn't include the higher level of program control required to block malware that sneaks past by tweaking approved programs. The firewall therefore didn't block any of a dozen leak-test programs that demonstrate these techniques, though the antivirus recognized several.

When I attacked the firewall directly, it started out macho. I couldn't disable it by changing its settings in the Registry.

I killed the firewall process with Task Manager, but on its way out, it disabled all network and Internet access—a reasonable countermeasure. However, when I turned off the firewall service, the system was laid wide open to attack from outside; malware could do the same thing using Microsoft Windows functions.

The best firewalls, such as ZoneAlarm's and Norton's, can't be killed by malware. The product also includes a degree of wireless network protection. You can configure it to check periodically who's using the network, but that's about all.

The antispam module filters POP3 e-mail and marks messages that seem to be spam. For Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express, it adds a toolbar and automatically routes spam messages to a quarantine folder.

Users of other e-mail clients must define a message rule to handle the spam. You can set three levels of spam detection, either overall or individually for seven categories, such as Adult, Financial, and Health. A higher detection level will catch more spam but may also flag more valid mail as spam. I found that it works just fine when you leave everything set to the default Medium level. When I tested it with almost 4, real-world messages, it put 1 percent of the valid mail into the spam folder and let 10 percent of the spam into the inbox.

That's better than most, but not up to the standard set by ZoneAlarm, which had no false positives and let through under 2 percent of spam in our last test. In the real world, you'd add the addresses from your Address Book to the Approved list and use the handy toolbar button to mark new correspondents as Approved—that would cut down the number of false positives even further.

The suite includes a number of features of varying quality for privacy protection and Web access control.
